Habitat Restoration

Coast redwood, the tallest species on the planet, can survive for thousands of years… or be felled in an instant. Sadly, our ancient redwood forest was clear-cut over a 40 year period beginning in 1880, but is now recovering & protected as The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park.

Unfortunately, our forest community faces new threats. Decades of fire suppression and inadequate forest management have created a massive stockpile of combustible fuel that now poses extreme risk. Pollutants & debris are contaminating our waterways. Invasive species, primarily ivy, are overtaking & decimating our riparian & woodland habitats.

Restoring the precious habitats in Aptos will be a massive ongoing effort, but we all share the responsibility of stewardship. Remember the words of the Lorax:

“UNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”
